What Makes a Business?
Lots of young people do odd jobs, weed gardens, wash
cars or babysit to earn money. Perhaps you have earned
money doing something similar. But did you consider
your odd job a business?
What do you think it takes to turn an odd job into
a business? Below are some typical answers from students.
Check whether you agree or disagree with each answer.
Some of these statements give clues about how a business
becomes a business, but none of the above is correct.
Four Criteria to Define Business
The dictionary says business is "the selling
of a product or service for a profit as a means of
providing livelihood."
Looking closely at this definition, there are four
criteria (or standards) that define a business: (1)
The selling (2) of a product or service (3) for a
profit (4) as a means of providing livelihood.
If your answer is yes to all four questions, you
have met the criteria for being in business. All that
you lack is the mindset that says: I'm open for business.
I'm going to run my business like a business, because
I am in business.
You can be proud of your enterprising attitude. You
are using your own creativity, energy and talent to
produce products and services that benefit others.
You are in business. So take your place in the economy.
Call your business a business and operate it like
the best business in the world.
