Start Thinking Like an Entrepreneur
Young people who create their own business enterprises
are called young entrepreneurs. You may already know
more about being an entrepreneur than you realise.
The word entrepreneur comes from the French word
"entreprende," which means "to undertake." The dictionary
says an entrepreneur (ahn' tra pra nur) is
"a person who organizes and manages a business undertaking,
assuming the risk for the sake of profit."
Anyone, young or old, can become an entrepreneur.
There is no age limit on entrepreneurship.
The Six Steps of Entrepreneurship
If you study this definition, you will see six steps
an entrepreneur takes to start a business. An entrepreneur:
(1)
Sees an opportunity
(2) Organizes a plan
(3) Assumes the risk
(4) Starts the business
(5) Manages the business
(6) Intends to make a profit
The young people featured in the case studies on
this website have practiced all six of these steps
to entrepreneurship. These are the same six steps
you will take as you prepare to start your own business
venture.
Entrepreneurs are Today's Pioneers
If you want to hear some inspiring stories, ask business
owners in your community how they got started. You'll
discover that some of your neighbors are pioneers
in business. Many have overcome great obstacles to
see their dreams come true.
Make a list of the five businesses you most admire
in your community. Then call the owners and tell them
you need some advice about a career in business. They
will be glad to answer your questions.
The secret of learning to think like the most successful
entrepreneurs in the world is this: Observe what successful
entrepreneurs do and copy them.
